A Hollywood star has been announced as the shock new host of BBC quiz House Of Games.

Michael Sheen has been confirmed as the replacement for Richard Osman on the next series of the BBC Two series. It comes after Richard Osman’s decision to step down having presented the series for the past nine years.

Sheen’s signing marks the multi-award-winning actor’s debut as quiz show host. He will preside over the recording of 100 episodes to be broadcast later this year.

Michael Sheen said: “Quite literally very large shoes to fill but as a huge fan of the show I’m incredibly excited to be able to move into the House and at long last see my silhouette on a fondue set.”

Tamara Gilder, Joint MD for Remarkable Entertainment, added: “We are thrilled to be handing Michael Sheen the keys to House of Games. The show has always been a love letter to those who adore quizzes – and we have a new host who loves them as much as we do. We can’t wait to start filming.”

Caroline O’Neill, BBC Commissioning Executive, said: “We’re delighted to have Michael Sheen stepping into the House of Games. His charisma and passion for playfulness will be a joy for audiences and we’ve no doubt he’ll relish throwing himself into a fiercely fought Answer Smash. We can’t wait to share this next era of the show with viewers at home.”

Richard Osman announced at the beginning of March he was stepping down from hosting the show after nine years.

At the time he said: “It has been such a great pleasure, and honour, to present House of Games for the last nine years, with the absolute best team in television. But it’s time to let someone else have a go, and I’m very excited to hand over the House keys to the lucky new host!”

House of Games has been a staple in the BBC Two and BBC iPlayer schedule since 2017. Series 9, which is currently on air, is performing well across all demographics, consolidating at over 1.6 million viewers.

As well as his successful Thursday Murder Club novel series – which was adapted into a movie with Dame Helen Mirren, Sir Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie and Pierce Brosnan – Richard has another cosy crime book series, We Solve Murders.

The star admitted he is quitting House of Games to make way for more writing, but said he will be “gutted” when he no longer makes the quiz show.
