Barbra Streisand lauded the late Robert Redford at the Oscars on Sunday, having worked with the actor on The Way We Were in 1973 for which she herself received an Oscar nomination

Jane Fonda made a playful jibe at Barbra Streisand after her tribute to Robert Redford at the Oscars.

Streisand, 83, took to the stage as part of the ceremony’s In Memoriam segment to honour Redford, who died on September 16, 2025 at the age of 89. The pair worked together on The Way We Were in 1973, for which Streisand herself received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

But Fonda, 88, worked on four films with Redford, such as 1966 drama The Chase and The Electric Horseman in 1979. Quipping to a reporter at an afterparty on Sunday night, Fonda said: “I want to know how come Streisand was up there doing that for Redford?” She playfully added that Streisand “only made one movie with him, I made four… I have more to say.”

Addressing the crowd at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, Streisand had said Redford “blazed his own trail”. The two-time Oscar winner added: “I called him an intellectual cowboy… Bob had real backbone on and off the screen. He spoke up to defend freedom of the press, protect the environment, and encourage new voices at his Sundance Institute, and some of whom some of whom are up for Oscars tonight, which is so great. He was thoughtful and bold.”

However, speaking after the ceremony, Fonda said, with a laugh, she “was always in love with him. The most gorgeous human being and such great values. And he did a lot for movies, he really changed movies, lifted up independent movies.”

The audience applauded as tributes were also paid to other notable stars, including Robert Reiner, Catherine O’Hara and Diane Keaton, at the Oscars. Numerous viewers observed that the In Memoriam segment was lengthier and more emotionally charged than usual, reports Entertainment Tonight.

It was extended by Streisand’s poignant respect to Redford, whose career spanned more than six decades. During the early part of this career, Redford starred in drama The Way We Were alongside Streisand. It was directed by Sydney Pollack, who later himself won two Oscars during his 40-year career.

Streisand had added: “He was a brilliant, subtle actor. We had a wonderful time playing off each other because we never quite knew what the other one was going to do in the scene.”

But Fonda, born in New York City, starred with the late actor in 1960’s The Tall Story, 1966’s The Chase, 1967’s Barefoot in the Park and 2017’s Our Souls at Night. In a statement shared on the day her friend died, the veteran actress said: “It hit me hard this morning when I read that Bob was gone. I can’t stop crying. He meant a lot to me and was a beautiful person in every way. He stood for an America we have to keep fighting for.”
