Iranian state media and the Council reported that he died alongside his son, Morteza Larijani, at his daughter’s home in the Pardis area near Tehran. The Israeli military claimed that the strike was a part of ongoing operations against the Iranian leadership. Who is Ali Larijani’s daughter, Fatemeh Ardeshir Larijani?

Fatemeh Ardeshir Larijani is the daughter of the late Ali Larijani, a former speaker of the Iranian Parliament and current secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. Fatemeh’s mother, Farideh Motahhari is the daughter of Morteza Motahhari, who shared a close relationship with Ruhollah Khomeini. Beyond Fatemeh’s high-profile family background, she made a name for herself in her own right. She chose an absolutely different path and stayed away from what her family was known for, i.e., politics. Fatemeh Ardeshir Larijani is an Iranian-American physician and oncologist.

Fatemeh is board-certified in internal medicine and medical oncology. Her clinical focus included thoracic oncology, specifically treating lung cancer, mesothelioma, and thymic tumours. She practised medicine at the Winship Cancer Institute and served as an assistant professor at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. Regarding her academic background, Fatemeh graduated from Tehran University of Medical Sciences around 2012 and later completed her medical training at the University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Centre in Ohio. Fatemeh is currently mourning the loss of her father, Ali Larijani.

How did Fatemeh Ardeshir Larijani’s father, Ali Larijani die?

Ali Larijani, the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on the night of March 16–17, 2026. The attack occurred while Larijani was visiting family on the eastern outskirts of Tehran. Ali was considered a de facto leader or a powerful figure in Iran following the reported assassination of the nation’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, on February 28, 2026. Along with his son, Morteza, the strike killed Alireza Bayat (head of Larijani’s office and a security deputy) and several bodyguards.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council confirmed the death of its chief, Ali Larijani. In an official statement, they recalled the contributions of Ali Larijani to the “advancement of Iran” and the “Islamic Revolution.” They considered Ali a martyr of the nation, who has now achieved his wish of travelling to the afterlife. Referring to Ali Larijani as “purified soul of God’s righteous servant”, the statement could be read as:

“The pure souls of the martyrs embraced the purified soul of God’s righteous servant, Martyr Dr Ali Larijani…After a lifetime of struggle for the advancement of Iran and of the Islamic Revolution, he ultimately attained his long-held aspiration, answered the divine call, and honourably achieved the sweet grace of martyrdom in the trench of service.”

As for Ali Larijani, he has been a prominent figure in Iranian politics for many decades. He served as Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, the Islamic Consultative Assembly, from 2008 to 2020. He had also worked as a secretary of the Supreme National Security Council and head of Iran’s state broadcasting organisation. Previously, from 2005 to 2007, he was Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator under President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Following his demise, there has been a major power vacuum in Iran.
