Actor Varun Dhawan recently took a trip down memory lane, reflecting on the early days of his career and how filmmaker Karan Johar played a pivotal role in launching him in Bollywood.

Speaking during an appearance on The Great Indian Kapil Show, Varun shared how his journey began behind the camera before he stepped into the spotlight.

Before making his acting debut, Varun was keen on understanding filmmaking from the ground up. This led him to work as an assistant director on My Name Is Khan, directed by Karan Johar.

Recalling the moment, Varun revealed that he had personally approached Johar with the intention of assisting him, a decision that allowed him to gain hands-on experience in both the creative and technical aspects of filmmaking.

His dedication during this phase was also highlighted by his father, filmmaker David Dhawan, who noted that Varun approached every task with sincerity and discipline.

Despite having the option of an easier entry into films, Varun chose to learn the craft thoroughly, focusing on understanding the process rather than rushing into acting.

The turning point came when Karan Johar decided to launch fresh faces with Student of the Year.

The film not only marked Varun Dhawan’s debut but also introduced Alia Bhatt and Sidharth Malhotra to the industry. David Dhawan recalled how Johar conducted a photoshoot with the trio before finalising the cast, presenting them as the fresh pairing for his ambitious project.
