Veteran labour activist, Dolores Huerta has once again brought national attention to her personal life and the history of the framework movement in the US. After keeping major secrets about her life under wraps, Dolores recently made shocking revelations about her bond with Cesar Chavez in the 1960s. While the 95-year-old’s revelations sparked a new debate, they have also led netizens to revisit her bond with Richard Chávez, the father of her four kids and Cesar Chavez’s brother, who was a steady presence in her life for over four decades.

Who was Richard Chavez? 

Richard Chávez was born in 1929. He was a labour leader, campaign organiser, and a skilled carpenter who was a key figure in the farmworker rights movement. He also worked closely with his brother and Dolores’ United Farm Workers Movement. Unlike many activists who worked with the public in the spotlight, Richard stayed out of it. Nonetheless, he made important contributions to the movement, such as organising major boycotts across the US in the 1970s. Subsequently, these efforts paved the way for the expansion of the farmworker movement.

Additionally, used his craftsmanship to support their movement. As a contractor, he helped build union offices, medical clinics, and housing projects for farmworkers, directly improving their lives. Richard also won praise for his practical approach and commitment to service. He had lent a helping hand in building financial support systems for workers, including initiatives tied to union-backed credit programs.

Therefore, he earned many recognitions for his work, including a Lifetime Achievement honor from civil rights organizations. Yet, he continued to maintain a low profile and passed away at the age of 81 in 2011. Apart from his four-decade-long bond with Dolores, he had earlier married Sally Chavez, with whom he had five kids. However, Richard spent the last 40 years of his life with Dolores, and they welcomed four kids.

How was Richard’s bond with Cesar Chavez?

Richard Chavez shared a close bond with his brother, Cesar Chavele. They grew up facing financial difficulties as the children of migrant farmworkers, which eventually shaped their mission for justice. Richard was also known as one of Cesar’s most trusted associates, and they lived honest lives together. Although Cesar was the public opinion, Richard offered stability and practical insight behind the scenes. But recent admissions by Dolores has brough the attention back on their bond.

What are Dolores Huerta’s allegations about Cesar Chavez? 

Dolores Huerta publicly released a statement in March 2026 admitting that Cesar Chavez sexually assaulted her in the 1960s. She explained that she had kept the truth hidden for decades to protect the farmworker movement. Initually, she admired him and did not object to his advances for the first time but gradually he went against her consent. This revealtion has shocked the people across the country. According to her statement, the incidents led to pregnancies, and other families later raised the children to ensure stability. In turn, Cesar Chavez had passed away in 1993 but his family stated they were “shocked and saddened” to hear about the allegations. Meanwhile, Dolores mentioned that she spoke now because broader conversations around accountability and support for other survivors influenced her. In her words:

“I have never identified myself as a victim, but I now understand that I am a survivor, of violence, of sexual abuse, of domineering men who saw me, and other women, as property, or things to control”.
