Life
At just 19, Maryam Maher speaks with a clarity and composure that feels far beyond her years. The Bahraini-born gamer, who made history as the first Arab female to join an international esports team in 2022, carries herself with a quiet confidence shaped by both instinct and experience. “I was always mature for my age,” she reflects. “When I was 12 or 13, I never felt my age. When I spoke to people in their twenties, they were always surprised.”
Part of that grounded perspective comes from her upbringing. As the eldest child, Maher grew up surrounded by a strong sense of responsibility, often looking to her mother—whom she describes as having been equally mature at a young age—as a guiding influence. But much of her emotional depth has been shaped by the path she chose early on. What began as casual gaming at her grandmother’s house quickly evolved into something far more defining. “I always had a feeling deep down that I was different,” she says. “When I started playing Fortnite, I realised I was gifted.”
Gifted, however, barely scratches the surface. Known in the gaming world as Mary Gaming, Maher’s rise was swift. A video of her eliminating 24 opponents in a single Fortnite match garnered over 85,000 views, propelling her into the spotlight. Soon after, she joined G2 Esports’ all-female team, G2 Gozen—marking a significant milestone not only for her career, but for representation in the region. At the time, female role models in gaming were few and far between. “I don’t recall having a female role model back then,” she says. “So I wanted to be the one who paved the way—for women in esports, but also in gaming content in general.”
Today, that intention has come full circle. Maher is now a visible and influential figure for young women entering the space—something she doesn’t take lightly. She recalls a recent moment at an event in Riyadh, where she met a young girl who reminded her of her younger self. “I went up to her and told her, ‘Whatever you set your mind to, it can happen.’ That’s what I want to do—show young women that gaming can be a real career.”
Behind the success, however, is a reality often overlooked. Maher is quick to challenge the perception that gaming is effortless. “People think you just sit at a computer and play for hours,” she says. “But it takes a team. It takes leadership. And a lot of sacrifice.” The journey hasn’t been without its challenges—particularly the emotional toll of pursuing a career so early. “I went through a lot of mental ups and downs,” she admits. “You can feel isolated, like you’re not on the same level as your peers.”

Yet it’s precisely this honesty that makes her story resonate. There’s a self-awareness in the way she speaks about resilience—one that feels both refreshing and necessary. “I’m proud of myself for overcoming that,” she says. “And I hope I can help others through my experience.”
Outside of gaming, Maher’s interests reflect a broader sense of ambition and curiosity. She speaks enthusiastically about her love for cars, something she shares with her father, as well as a growing interest in watches—both of which she hopes to build into future collections. But beyond material goals, her vision remains rooted in something more meaningful. “First, I want to be healthy and surrounded by family and friends,” she says. “Then everything else can come—building a business, travelling the world, inspiring people.”
She pauses, then adds with a laugh, “And yes, becoming a billionaire. You have to dream big.”
And she does.
