Life
For Mamta Nihalani, founder of Apothecary by Mamta, the influence of her mother is a profound and enduring force. In a series of reflections for Emirates Woman’s Mother’s Day series, Mamta paints a portrait of a woman defined not by grand gestures, but by a quiet, resilient strength, boundless selflessness, and a deep-seated belief that kindness is the ultimate way to navigate the world. From cherished childhood memories in Dubai to the life lessons that continue to guide her, Mamta shares how her mother’s example has become her own anchor.
What is one thing your mother has done for you that you didn’t fully appreciate until you got older?
What I deeply admire about my mother growing up was everything she did to protect my peace. I never really understood her worries or her boundaries up until now, and I can really see that it was out of love, foresight and a quiet strength I deeply admire.
If you had to describe your mom in three words, what would they be — and why?
If I had to describe my mother in three words, it would be strong, selfless and grounding. Strong because she’s just handled everything that’s come her way, selfless, because she puts everyone before herself, and grounding, because no matter where she is and where I am, she is always my anchor and just gives me that peace.
What is one thing your mom always says that you used to roll your eyes at — but now find yourself saying too?
One thing that I used to roll my eyes at, that my mom used to say growing up, was “everything is going to be okay,” even when the whole world was crumbling around us. Literally, I never understood it. I always thought it was her just giving us comfort, until I realized it was her really giving me the strength when I didn’t really have any myself.
What is a moment with your mom that you wish you could relive again?
The moments I could relive with my mother are growing up in Dubai. She would pick me up from school most days and take me over to Al Nasr Leisureland, where I would have ice skating practice, and she would be there throughout the practice and watch me, and then would also, on the way back home, take me to Al Mallah for my favorite shawarma, or to study kebab for Iranian kebabs, which I loved, which was a real treat and real bonding time with her.
What is one thing about your mom that makes her cooler than most people think?
One thing I think makes my mom super cool is the fact that she’s just so resilient. She just handles everything that life throws her way with so much grace and dignity and shows up with warmth and love no matter what, and thinks and knows everything is going to be okay, no matter what. That’s the kind of cool you don’t see very often.
What piece of advice from your mom do you think every young woman should hear?
A piece of advice that my mother has given me, and actually has been a true example of throughout her life, is just be kind. You don’t lose anything by being kind, even if you feel that someone is unkind to you, continue to give them grace and kindness and understand that they may be going through something right now which is not ideal, and hence they are being the way they are. But always give them that grace and she is a true example of that. I’ve seen her live by that her entire life, and I think it’s such a beautiful way to live.
