Buffy the Vampire Slayer icon Sarah Michelle Gellar has lead tributes to her co-star Nicholas Brendon following the news of his death at age 54.

Sarah, who played the titular role on the hit TV series, posted a throwback photo of herself alongside Nicholas as she said the actor is “at peace”. The death of actor Nicholas, who played Xander Harris on the hit show, was announced in a statement shared by his family on social media on Friday night – in which they shared his cause of death.

Nicholas was best known for playing Xander Harris on the hit show between 1997 and 2003, who was the best friend of Buffy. Nicholas was nominated for three Emmys for his role as Xander, two for best TV actor and one for best TV supporting actor. He also had roles on Criminal Minds, in which he played Kevin Lynch, Redwood and Faking It amongst roles in movies, too.

In the family statement Nicholas’ family said he died “in his sleep of natural causes”. In the wake of the sad news, tributes poured in for Nicholas across social media including from Buffy star Sarah, 48.

As she posted a photo of the pair smiling together on her Instagram page, she penned began the caption with a quote, it read: “They’ll never know how tough it is to be the one who isn’t chosen. To live so near to the spotlight, and never step in it. But I know. I see more than anybody realizes, because nobody’s watching me”, addressing her friend directly, he added: “I saw you Nicky. I know you are at peace, in that big rocking chair in the sky.”

Other Buffy stars followed suit with tributes to Nicholas, including Alyson Hannigan, who played Willow Rosenberg on the series. She shared a photo of herself and Nicky hugging while filming on Buffy and added in the caption: “My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers. I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair. I love you. RIP “.

Meanwhile, Emma Caulfield – who portrayed Anya Jenkins on the hit horror series – also paid tribute as she re-shared a video of Nicholas discussing his ‘ultimate Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode’ on her Instagram stories. She wrote on top: “No word yet. I love you Nicky. Let this clip of us giving it our best be a placeholder. Rest Nicky. Rest. Anya”.

Nicholas’ family announced the sad news of his death on social media, with a statement which read: “We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed in his sleep of natural causes.

“Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans.”

It continued: “He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was.” The statement went on: “Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart.

“Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support,” the family wrote as they signed off the statement.
