Two years ago today, the Princess of Wales announced she was undergoing treatment for cancer, and later revealed the six-word message of reassurance she told George, Charlotte and Louis
The Princess of Wales poignantly revealed what she told her young children about her cancer treatment following her diagnosis. Two years ago today, Kate revealed she was undergoing a course of preventative chemotherapy after post-operative tests discovered cancer, after undergoing abdominal surgery in January 2024. The future queen disclosed in her emotional and heartfelt televised statement to the world on March 22 that the difficult news came as a ‘huge shock’.
At the time, Kate stepped back from public duties over several months to recover from her major operation. Kate and Prince William also made it a priority to gently inform their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, as the mother-of-three reassured them: “I am going to be ok.”

In her official statement announcing her health battle, Kate said: “As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok.”
The Princess continued: “As I have said to them; I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits. Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance too. As is the love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both.”
Kate requested the public and media to respect her family’s privacy as she navigated her path to recovery. She added: “We hope that you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy whilst I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery.”
The Princess also seized the moment to thank the public for their ‘wonderful messages and support’ and praised her ‘fantastic medical team’. She concluded with: “At this time, I am also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer. For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone.”
Last September, several months after Kate had announced her cancer was in remission, Prince William opened up about how his wife’s health battle had impacted their family, and how the children coped with the news. The Prince of Wales joined Canadian comedian and actor Eugene Levy on his new show The Reluctant Traveller, as they sat in a pub in Windsor for the candid conversation.
William spoke about how 2024 had been “the hardest year of my life” amid both Kate and King Charles‘ cancer battles, but that they were “constantly learning and adapting”.
“Everyone has their own coping mechanisms for these sorts of things, and children are constantly learning and adapting. We try to make sure we give them the security and the safety that they need,” he explained as he opened up on his family.
“We’re a very open family, so we talk about things that bother us, and things that trouble us, but you never quite know the knock-on effects that it can have. It’s just important to be there for each other and to kind of reassure the children that everything is okay.”
