Vasas saves win over OSC with last-second goal

Two out of four games of the third round in the upper group of the Hungarian League (1st – 8th place) were big thrillers. Vasas beat OSC in one of the two Budapest derbies, 12:11, and Szolnok earned two points after defeating Szeged in a penalty shootout.

OSC scored the first two goals in the home match against Vasas, but the visitors responded strongly. Vasas went on an 8:0 run, earning an 8:2 lead in the 15th minute. After Vasas’s eighth goal, OSC ended its long scoreless phase. But Vasas entered the second half leading 9:3. Vasas controlled the match, and few believed OSC could come back. Three minutes and 36 seconds before the end, Vasas was five steps ahead of OSC – 11:6. With a minute and 20 seconds to go, the visitors still had a solid advantage (11:8).It seemed that the contest was over. But OSC scored three goals in just 74 seconds. Gal equalized at 11:11, six seconds before the end of the game. However, Vasas ultimately prevailed. In the very last second, Peter Szalai rocketed the ball from the middle of the field, scoring the winning goal.

Bogdan Djurdjic contributed six and Szalai four goals to Vasas’s 12:11 victory, and David Gal scored five goals for OSC.

Ferencvaros beat BVSC 12:6. The European champion made the difference in the first half. At the middle break, Ferencvaros led 9:3. The remaining two quarters were balanced. Nine Ferencvaros players got on the scoresheet, with Vamos Jansik and Manhercz scoring two goals each. David Tatrai and Erik Csacsovszky scored two each for BVSC.

Szeged was in front for most of an away match against Szolnok, but it returned home with only one point.  Early in the fourth period, Szeged had an 11:8 lead. Still, it couldn’t keep the advantage until the end. Szolnok leveled at 12:12, just 59 seconds before the end, and took two points after beating Szeged in a penalty shootout, 19:18.
