The Great Celebrity Bake Off returns on March 22 in aid of Stand Up To Cancer, with new judge Cherish Finden joining the Channel 4 show as Paul Hollywood makes surprising confession

The Great British Bake Off host Alison Hammond has shared her thoughts on the show’s newest judge, whilst her colleague Paul Hollywood made a “brutal” confession. The Great Celebrity Bake Off is back today (March 22) in support of Stand Up To Cancer.

Ahead of the broadcast, which features celebs battling it out in the iconic Bake Off tent, both presenter Alison, 51, and judge Paul Hollywood, 60, opened up about their feelings ahead of the new series. The new series will see 24 celebrities vying for the coveted title, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Both Alison and Paul expressed their admiration for the show’s latest judge, Cherish Finden, and what she brings to the competition. Cherish has been a judge on Bake Off: The Professionals since 2016.

Alison said: “Cherish got on brilliantly. She fitted into the tent straight away and felt like a very natural addition to the Celebrity Bake Off family. She was a really good laugh, too – very calm, very warm and great with the celebs when they were panicking.”

Paul, on the other hand, commended Cherish for her candid feedback to the celebrities and her serious approach to their creations. He said: “Cherish is amazing. We got on really well. She’s so sweet…she’s one of the best pastry chefs in the country. To work alongside her was a real privilege.”

Cherish was born in Singapore and pursued training as a pastry chef following her move to Britain. Discussing her approach with the celebrities, Paul remarked: “She was honest with them. Brutally honest sometimes, but it worked really well. She’s so good at what she does.”

Whilst Cherish reportedly displayed brutal honesty with the celebrities, Paul revealed that she had experienced some apprehension about entering the tent. Alison mentioned that despite “a few nerves at first” they ensured she felt welcomed immediately.

Yet this hasn’t been Paul’s sole culinary revelation lately, with the seasoned Bake Off judge confessing in January he harboured affection for a particular pastry associated with Greggs, the yum yum.

Speaking to the BBC he stated: “I’ve got a soft spot for yum yums.” Despite his acknowledged fondness for the yum yum, Greggs confirmed he had never visited a branch of the beloved bakery chain.

He commented: “I’ve been in Greggs. I’ve never been in a Greggs. In the 80s my dad had bread shops which were exactly the same as Greggs, so Greggs have just ripped my dad off.

“We used to make pies, cream cakes, sandwiches. Everything was fresh, soups. Yeah, I mean, it’s not a new thing, Greggs, but I mean, I’ve actually never been in one. I need to try one.”

A stellar line-up of famous faces from the worlds of entertainment, reality telly, music, broadcasting and comedy have committed to the upcoming series. Among them are comedian Joe Wilkinson, reality TV favourites Vicky Pattison, Molly-Mae Hague and Mark Wright, singer Aston Merrygold and Radio 2 presenter Scott Mills.

The Great Celebrity bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer is due to start at 7.40pm on Channel 4. Along with Paul, Alison and Cherish, Alison’s co-host Noel Fielding will be joining the celebrities in the iconic tent.
