Rick Pitino and Joanne Minardi’s relationship began as a high school romance on Long Island. They were reportedly introduced by Joanne’s brother, Bill Minardi (popularly known as Billy), who was one of Rick’s high school classmates and also his best friend. Rick testified that weeks later, Karen informed him that she was pregnant. He said that he provided her with USD 3,000, which was used for an abortion. The college basketball coach initially claimed that he believed the money was for medical insurance and counselling. The infidelity became public when Karen Sypher attempted to extort USD 10 million from Rick in exchange for her silence regarding allegations that he forced her to have a physical encounter with him.

The claims of an unconsensual physical encounter were later dismissed by investigators as baseless. In 2011, Karen Sypher was reportedly convicted of extortion and lying to the FBI, receiving a sentence of 7 years and 2 months in federal prison. Despite the public nature of the scandal, Joanne Minardi and their family chose to stand by Rick Pitino.
