A founding member of The Zutons says he could be “dead right now” after sustaining a serious head injury in an alleged racially motivated attack
One former member of The Zutons warns he could be “dead right now” after he was rushed to hospital following an attack that was thought to be “racially” motivated.
Boyan Chowdhury was one of the founding members of the Liverpool indie rock band behind the hit song Valerie, later covered by Amy Winehouse. Chowdhury shared a picture of himself with a gruesome gash on his head and blood running down his face to Instagram on 21 March.
The guitarist alleged that the group of men who attacked whilst out in Liverpool him used racial slurs as they hit him over the head with a piece of wood. He said he was “racially attacked” and added that they called him a “dirty arab”, among other slurs. He then said: “If I hadn’t of turned around I believe I would’ve been struck on the back of the head and dead right now.”

He continued: “He got me across the front and as you can see split my head open down to the skull. They had ran back to his friends house to get the piece of wood to attack me. This city is f**king s**t. Full of dirty horrible racist rats. And it’s just getting worse by the day.”
Fans shared support for the guitarist in the comments. One said: “This is beyond awful. @merseysidepolice need to take this very seriously.” Another said: “So unbelievably sad that this has happened to you, this is why we need to get out there but sadly many more of us need to actively be doing the work to make our city safe for everyone. Solidarity, shared and will support if needed.”
Merseyside Police confirmed that Chowdhury sustained a head injury and required treatment at a hospital. DI Debra Morley told ITV : “This was a shocking assault that has absolutely no place in our communities.
“To racially abuse someone and then attack him with a weapon is abhorrent and I’m sure the public in Merseyside will be just as appalled as we are about what happened.”
She added that “an investigation is ongoing into this incident” and that the police were “appealing for anyone with information to come forward”. This included if anyone saw a group of males near the Fieldway area or anyone who may have witnessed the incident.
DI Morley continued that “violence and hate crime will simply never be tolerated” in Liverpool and that the police have “specially trained officers” who will respond to hate crime reports with “compassion and sensitivity”.
ITV added that anyone with information can contact the police on their social media account or call 101 quoting the reference 26000226633. Anonymous information could also be given to the charity Crimestoppers who could be contacted on the phone number 0800 555 111 or via an online form.
