The third round of ‘No Kings’ protests against Donald Trump and his leadership of the US government is set to take place on Saturday, March 28th. Here’s where in Germany demonstrations are planned.

Saturday, March 28th, marks the third day of widespread protests under the motto of “No Kings”, which are a direct response to Donald Trump’s leadership in the US and the increasingly authoritarian tactics of his administration.

Last year, the “No Kings Day of Peaceful Action” which occurred on July 14th was reported to be the largest single-day protest in American history. Outside of the US, related rallies and protests were also organised in many big cities across Europe and in Germany.

Where in Germany are ‘No Kings’ events on Saturday?

On the website Nokings.org, most official protest events can be found on an interactive map, including those outside of the US.

In Germany, protests are scheduled in Hamburg, Bremen, Düsseldorf, Wiesbaden, Frankfurt, Nuremberg and Munich.

In Hamburg, the event is set to take place from 4pm to 6pm on Saturday, and meets at Kehrwiederspitze. In Düsseldorf it takes place at the Musikpavillon im Hofgarten from 12pm to 2pm, and in Munich at Odeonsplatz from 12:15pm to 3 pm.

A Berlin protest was not listed on the No Kings website, but was mentioned in other event posts on German sites. Previously the event took place in the Tiergarten (behind the US Embassy) on the corner of Ebertstraße / Behrenstraße from 2 pm.

There are also protests taking place in many of Germany’s neighbouring countries that might be more accessible to some people living in the country’s border regions. These include events set in Basel and Zurich, Switzerland; Vienna, Austria; Amsterdam, The Netherlands; and Copenhagen, Denmark.

More information on all of the above protests can be found here (scroll down to the map and zoom in on Germany to find the protest nearest you.)

What are the protests about?

The “No Kings” movement is a direct reaction to the Trump administration. The name is a reference to the US President having previously referred to himself as a king in posts on his social media platform. As organisers of the movement put it: “In America, we have no kings.”

Protestors oppose the Trump administration for defying the US courts, attacking civil rights and slashing services for citizens and residents, among other things. This time around, Trump’s war on Iran and the looming energy crisis will also certainly be a major point of protest.

The Trump administration and Germany

Under Trump’s leadership, Germany – US relations have been pushed to the brink.

The Trump administration had previously announced plans to close consulates in Germany. It also angered allies in Europe and Germany by imposing tariffs and threatening to act aggressively in Greenland.

More recently, Trump’s decision to attack Iran and start a regional war there alongside Israel has irritated European leaders.

The German Chancellor has so far been cautious to not explicitly condemn the US’s attacks on Iran, and has continued to let the US military use its bases in Germany. He did, however, repeatedly call for a quick end to the war, which is widely seen as a direct threat to the German economy.

Meanwhile Germany’s president said this week that he thinks the US-Israeli war in Iran is a “breach of international law”.
