Florian Wirtz described his display in Germany’s 4-3 win over Switzerland as his best yet after playing a decisive role in all four goals.

The attacking midfielder scored twice and provided two assists in a chaotic friendly in Basel, as Julian Nagelsmann’s side twice came from behind.

Reflecting on his performance, Wirtz admitted it was likely his standout showing at international level so far.

“Probably, yes. With this many goal involvements, yes.

“For the first goal, I’d be lying if I said I meant for it to go exactly there, but I’ll take it. On the second goal, you can see that’s exactly where I wanted the ball to go.”

The 21-year-old has now registered six goal involvements across his last two appearances for Germany, continuing an impressive run of form since his move from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool.

Despite the attacking output, Wirtz acknowledged there are still areas for improvement ahead of the World Cup.

“Of course, we all want to reach the final and bring the World Cup home. We know it will be tough, but we have a great squad and we don’t need to hide,” he said.

“We have a very good team and very good defenders. It’s been quite some time since we played together. The goals we conceded were avoidable. We’ll work on improving that.”

Head coach Nagelsmann echoed those concerns, despite being satisfied with the overall result and attacking display.

“We created many big chances against a team that usually concede very little. I think we could have scored many more goals,” he said.

“Switzerland certainly made the most of their few chances. Flo scored a couple of exceptional goals, that has to be said.

“But defensively, things weren’t always good today. We were too passive at times. That has to be pointed out quite clearly. Overall, though, we deserved to win.”

Germany continue their preparations with another friendly against Ghana on Monday as Nagelsmann fine-tunes his squad ahead of the tournament.
