Davina McCall opened up about her concerns to her co-star Jamie Theakston, while also updating fans on her health following her breast cancer ordeal
Davina McCall has opened up about the guilt she felt after believing she had “hurt” her co-star Jamie Theakston ahead of his cancer diagnosis. In 2024, the pair faced separate health ordeals, with Jamie battling stage one laryngeal cancer and Davina undergoing surgery for a benign tumour called a colloid cyst.
Back presenting together on Heart Radio Breakfast, the duo reflected on their difficult couple of years and how they supported each other through their health scares.
Looking back on Jamie’s diagnosis, Davina, 58, admitted she initially felt responsible after giving him a tight hug caused pain in his throat.
During the same period, listeners also raised concerns about a noticeable change in Jamie’s voice, prompting him to seek medical advice and ultimately receive his diagnosis.
Discussing their experiences live on air, Davina said: “We’ve been on quite a journey, you and me.
“Honestly, when I got you in that sort of grip where I hurt your throat and you found out it was cancer, I carried that burden where I thought I’d hurt you for quite a long time,” she admitted.
But Jamie reassured her that the moment ultimately worked in his favour.
“Well no, because as I always said, if you hadn’t have done that, I would never have known,” he replied.
After returning to the studio in 2025 following surgery, the 55-year-old said that, in hindsight, Davina may have helped save his life.
“Without you doing that, I would not have known there was something wrong with my throat,” he explained. “So, in actual fact, it wasn’t that you did any damage – it was the opposite.”
Jamie also used the moment to encourage listeners to take potential symptoms seriously.
“Ignoring cancer won’t beat it. Cancer loves being ignored. It’s a coward that lives in the shadows, and I think that, if we can shine a light on that, then we can defeat the darkness.
“If we just get ourselves checked, then a stage one diagnosis – which is what I was very fortunate enough to have – shouldn’t be a problem. But I do urge you to go and get checked.”
Reflecting on the moment she received the news, she said: “It felt like being punched in the face by the universe. I just thought, what? I was just beginning to feel myself again.”
She added that the experience serves as an important reminder for women to regularly check themselves.
“I found a lump myself and I had had a mammogram in the August. It was in October that I found a lump, so don’t just think, ‘I had a mammogram recently, it can’t be that’ – it could be.
“If you’ve got something, go and get it looked at. It takes seconds,” she cautioned.
Asked how she is now, the former Big Brother host revealed that a recent scan confirmed there was “nothing there”.
