Scott Mills was sacked from his BBC Radio 2 breakfast show over an allegation concerning ‘personal conduct’ but previously credited those at the BBC for helping him get through the death of a boyfriend
Scott Mills shared how the BBC helped him after the death of a boyfriend, saying “thank God for Radio 1” prior to his axing from the broadcaster. Mills’ departure from BBC Radio 2 was announced on 30 March and he was sacked over an allegation concerning his “personal conduct”.
Prior to working for BBC Radio 2, Mills worked for Radio 1 for years. He started working there in 1998 and stayed for 24 years, until moving to Radio 2 in 2022. He admitted that at one point in the early 2000s, he struggled with an alcohol battle following the death of a boyfriend and even went into work drunk.

Talking to Now Magazine in 2012, he explained: “It was truly awful. I’d been to the Brits. After my Radio 1 show, the police were waiting for me. They told me he’d died. I couldn’t process it. As it dawned on me, it got worse and worse and worse. I started smoking that day and I haven’t stopped since.”
The star added that he would “wake up at 2.30am, do the show, come home and go back to sleep” before waking up again to “drink two bottles of wine or a bottle of spirits in front of the TV”. He then went into work drunk, which he admitted was a “massive f***-up”.
“Even I would’ve sacked me,” he said. “But thank God for Radio 1 – they knew about Mitch and why I was having a bad time. It was a proper wake-up call.”
Mills’ sacking from the BBC comes after he was taken off air on Tuesday 24 March. He was replaced with Gary Davies. Bosses announced his dismissal on 30 March.
The Mirror exclusively revealed that Mills was sacked from his role as the breakfast radio host for BBC Radio 2 following an allegation relating to his personal conduct.
The Mirror also understands the allegation relates to a historic relationship dating back more than 10 years. The 53-year-old was taken off air from his Radio 2 show last Wednesday while the BBC assessed the information. He was told his contract was terminated at the weekend, sources claim. Mills took over the flagship breakfast show from Zoe Ball in 2025.
The BBC said: “While we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted to work with the BBC.”
News of Mills’ axing led the 12pm bulletin on his former station BBC Radio 2. At the start of his show on BBC Radio 2, Jeremy Vine said he was “taken aback” by the news about Mills.
He said: “Obviously, I was taken aback by that opening story to the news. I had not heard anything about it until 17 minutes ago, when it was on the BBC website, and I only had the information that was given to you in the bulletin, I have nothing more, that it was allegations about Scott Mills’s personal conduct, which have led to him being sacked. I have no more than that. Alright, on to today’s show.”
