Ten-man Italy missed out on a third consecutive World Cup after losing their play-off on penalties to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali was the only Italian player to score from the spot as Bosnia and Herzegovina found the net with all four of their penalties after taking advantage of Alessandro Bastoni’s first-half sending off to come from behind to draw 1-1 in normal time.

Former Everton striker Moise Kean had given Italy the lead after 15 minutes before Bastoni was shown a straight red card shortly before the break. The hosts equalised in the closing stages through Haris Tabakovic to take the game to extra-time.

Italy substitutes Pio Esposito and Bryan Cristante missed in the shoot-out as Italy failed to qualify for the tournament they have won on four previous occasions.

The Azzurri failed to progress beyond the group stages in the two tournaments after their success in Germany and have since not even qualified for the World Cup.
