The Mirror revealed that the former BBC Radio 1 and 2 DJ was questioned in 2018 over the historical allegations of serious sexual offences, but the investigation – which began in 2016 – was closed in 2019 after the CPS deemed there was insufficient evidence to bring charges. The Metropolitan Police told the Mirror that the teenage boy at the centre of the investigation was under 16.On Wednesday April 1, The Mirror revealed that the BBC was forced to terminate Mills’ contract after receiving compelling new information. The BBC has since confirmed the Mirror’s report a day after it emerged that they knew of information relating to the police investigation. They pledged that they were “doing more work to understand the detail of what was known by the BBC at this time.”

Rylan and Mills’ show had been hailed as “BBC Radio 2’s flagship entertainment podcast” with the pair ranking iconic music and pop culture with special guests. Previous guests had included Perrie Edwards and Craig David, while Natalie Cassidy and Dani Dyer have also featured.

The removal of the Pop Top 10 podcast comes shortly after it was revealed another podcast involving Mills was removing him from production. He had previously been the host of the BBC’s Race Across The World podcast after he won the celebrity version with his husband Sam Vaughan in 20.

But just days before its return – and with questions over his involvement in the EastEnders New Year’s special, where he is set to give a radio shout out to Max Branning (Jake Wood) – the BBC said: “We can confirm he is no longer contracted to work on any BBC projects.”

On Wednesday, Mills broke his silence on his dismissal. In a statement provided by Mills’ lawyers to the Mirror and other media, hes said: “The recent announcement that I am no longer contracted to the BBC has led to the publication of rumour and speculation. In response to this the Metropolitan Police has made a statement, which I confirm relates to me.

“An allegation was made against me in 2016 of a historic sexual offence which was the subject of a police investigation in which I fully cooperated and responded to in 2018.

“As the police have stated, a file of evidence was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, which determined that the evidential threshold had not been met to bring charges.

“Since the investigation related to an allegation that dates back nearly 30 years and the police investigation was closed 7 years ago, I hope that the public and the media will understand and respect my wish not to make any further public comment on this matter.

“I wish to thank from the bottom of my heart all those who have reached out to me with kindness, my former colleagues, and my beloved listeners, who I greatly miss.”
