Jessie Buckley was sensationally linked with becoming the next James Bond with an announcement reportedly confirming her role as the iconic agent
It’s a claim that left James Bond fans stunned. Jessie Buckley set to become the next 007 in a huge switch-up of the much-loved franchise.
The announcement left fans shellshocked, with the supposed revelation set to make the Irish actress the first female lead in the franchise. But while some avid followers were left gobsmacked, others simply didn’t buy into the claims.
Buckley, best known for her award-winning performance in Hamnet, was linked with the role in an apparent confirmation on Wednesday. It read: “The casting news we’ve all been waiting for has finally dropped, and the reveal of Daniel Craig’s successor as 007 may surprise some James Bond fans… “

The report by the euronews website continued: “After years of incessant rumours, the news has finally dropped… We now know the identity of the actor playing the next James Bond.”
The post reeled off a number of previously linked stars to replace the outgoing Daniel Craig, including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Tom Holland, Harris Dickinson, Scott Rose-Marsh and Jacob Elordi. It went on: “Now, Euronews Culture can officially end all speculation by revealing that the identity of the new James Bond is… Irish actress and singer Jessie Buckley.”
Sadly for the Golden Globe winner and her fans, the date of the post gave away the fact it wasn’t actually true, landing on April Fools. It means that the identity of the agent remains under wraps for now.
With James Bond’s character one of the most sought after roles in the industry, one popular star removed their name from the running recently, claiming to be too old for the part. Idris Elba confessed he felt his age would scupper his chances at landing the coveted role.
In November last year, Elba, 53, told the Mirror: “I can’t believe I am still being asked this at 53! “When you sign up to Bond you sign up for a decade of making films, often a bit longer. Nobody wants to see Bond running around in his mid 60s!”
Instead, Elba insisted he’ll stick to roles such as Luther. “Luther is the character I have played the longest it’s probably the character that takes the most out of me,” he admitted. “It takes such concentration to play Luther, he is so complex, and that’s why I love playing him because he takes me to places I haven’t been before.
“There is nothing to report at the moment, but I don’t think I am ready to say I have hung up his coat just yet.”
Bond’s identity has been a mystery since Craig’s departure in 2021 after an impressive performance in No Time To Die. Now, with filming for Bond 26 slated to start in 2027 ahead of a 2028 release, fans are hopeful there will be an announcement sooner rather than later.
