A Florida politician has been found dead in her home.
The Vice Mayor of Coral Springs, Nancy Metayer Bowen, had been planning to run for higher office.
One day before she announced herself as a candidate in the Democratic primary and run for Congress, police discovered her apparent homicide.
Her husband, Stephen Bowen, is now in custody.

She was found dead on Wednesday, April 1
Recent years have seen multiple political killings — most notably, the shootings of Minnesota legislators last year.
The homicide of Carol Springs’ Vice Mayor, however, appears to have a more personal motive.
On Wednesday, April 1, authorities entered her home on a welfare check.
Given Metayer Bowen’s busy schedule and her professional reputation, her being a no-show at a planned event set off alarm bells with her colleagues.
Those alarms were justified. Investigators discovered her, deceased, in her upscale home in a gated community.
As you can see in the photo below, authorities have marked off the residence with police tape.
Investigators will need continuous access to the home to further document evidence and to prevent tampering — accidental or deliberate.
Police immediately began investigating her death as a domestic violence incident.
A manhunt began for her husband, Stephen Bowen.
He was not at home.

Her husband is now in custody
Investigators soon caught up with him about a dozen miles away in Plantation.
There, he was taken into custody.
Stephen Bowen has been booked into Broward County Jail in Fort Lauderdale.
He faces charges of both premeditated murder and tampering with evidence.
It is believed that he acted alone. There are no additional suspects at this time.

Florida Representative Jared Moskowitz tweeted his shock at Metayer Bowen’s tragic killing.
He also revealed that she was in the midst of running for higher office.
She had planned to announce her candidacy for Congress — starting with the Democratic primary — on Thursday, April 2.
Her goal was to take the seat of embattled Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick.
She was a true political rising star — snuffed out by an evil act.

She was a political force for good
Metayer Bowen was elected as commissioner of Coral Springs for her first term in 2020.
She was the first Black and Haitian American woman to fill the roll.
In 2024, she was reelected. In November 2025, she received her appointment to serve a second term as Vice Mayor.
Metayer Bowen has a passion for sustainability, and this was a driving focus of her work in the political arena.
Her coworkers are mourning her loss. As are we all.
