The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson is the latest documentary, which was released on April 3, 2026, on Netflix. The docu-series brings back attention to the 2022 tragic death of Moriah Wilson, a famous cycling star who was brutally shot dead. The 1-hour 35-minute documentary explores the journey of the late star, directed by Mariana Zenovich. 

The murder of Moriah Wilson is the most shocking tragedy in recent times in American sports. The documentary reconstructs the events and what followed after her murder in Austin, Texas. Her killer, who was also her Yoga instructor, killed her out of jealousy and a love triangle, but it was her escape plan and 43-day manhunt that left many wondering about the state of mind of a killer.

Who was Moriah Wilson?

Moriah Wilson was a young woman who made her name count as a professional cyclist. She rose to fame for off-road racing, including gravel and mountain biking. She was a Dartmouth graduate and a former elite skier. She has made her name and won victories in the Big Sugar Gravel race, and people know she has a bright future. She was fondly known as someone warm and deeply loved in the cycling community. Her journey is beautifully shown in the new Netflix documentary.

Moriah Wilson’s brutal murder by her yoga instructor out of jealousy

Moriah Wilson, who was preparing for a race, was staying at a property in Austin. However, on the night of May 11, 2022, she was shot dead with no one to her rescue. Her friend discovered her body and immediately called 911. The recording of the incident features in the documentary, and it sends goosebumps to many.

After investigations, all eyes were on Moriah’s yoga instructor, Kaitlin Marie Armstrong. She was also a real estate agent. After a detailed investigation, where a neighbourhood surveillance camera footage showed a black SUV arriving shortly before Moriah’s murder. After tracing the vehicle, they found out that it belonged to Kaitlin. She had a relationship with Colin Strickland. 

The investigations further revealed that Kaitlin killed Moriah out of jealousy, as Moriah was previously in a relationship with her beau, Colin. Also, Kaitlin’s cellphone was turned off at the time of Moriah’s murder, followed by her instant trip from the crime scene. She flew to the United States, which was followed by an international manhunt, which served as proof.

The case further drew a lot of attention as Kaitlin, who flew to the United States, managed to escape for 43 days. She was found in Costa Rica, where authorities found out that she had altered her appearance through plastic surgery and was using false identification to escape the law. 

Kaitlin was arrested in June 2022, after a trial in Texas, she was found guilty of first-degree murder. She has been sentenced to 90 years in prison. In 2024, Wilson’s parents were awarded USD 15 million in a wrongful death lawsuit against Kaitlin, so that she doesn’t benefit from the murder.

As of now, Kaitlin Armstrong is serving her jail time at the Dr Lane Murray Unit, a prison in Gatesville, Texas. She will have the eligibility for parole after serving around 30 years of her sentence. Hence, she won’t be able to come out on parole until the early 2050s. Her attempt to challenge the judgment has been unsuccessful. Meanwhile, Moriah’s family is trying to preserve her legacy and not let the woman who murdered her gain the limelight.
