The slot where Stephen’s show was coming for all this time is now being taken by Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen. The schedule does not end here. Byron Allen’s show will air an hour early, while it takes the slot of Stephen Colbert’s show
For the unversed, Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen was originally airing at 12:30 a.m. for the 2025/26 broadcast season. Now it will be coming at 11:35 p.m. from May 22, 2026. This is expected to bring more profits for CBS during the late-night hours. The ending of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was originally announced in July 2025. Around two months after the news was confirmed, Byron opened up about his interest in taking the 11:35 time slot for his show. While speaking at the Advertising Week New York in October 2025, Byron said:
“Let me be clear… if they are looking for a show, my hand is already up. Fifty years I have been waiting for this moment, definitely I am going for it.”
Notably, Byron Allen’s show, Comics Unleashed, took the 12:35 slot after CBS decided to discontinue After Midnight. For the unversed, Comics Unleashed originally premiered in 2006 and aired 233 episodes until 2016. The show initially aired for two hours on CBS before it took the 11:35 slot recently. CBS and Byron’s company, Allen Media Group, is already working under a deal for the 2026-27 season, which means Byron has to pay to air his shows on the network.
Stephen Colbert confirmed the cancellation of his show in 2025
The news of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was first revealed in July 2025 in an episode of the show. Stephen announced while speaking to the live audience that the show is ending in May 2026. The news arrived after the merger of Paramount Global, the parent company of CBS, with Skydance. A separate statement related to the cancellation was shared by George Cheeks, the co-CEO of Paramount and CBS president, alongside CBS Entertainment head, Amy Reisenbach, and CBS Studios president, David Stapf. They said:
“We consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will retire The Late Show franchise at that time. We are proud that Stephen called CBS home. He and the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late television.”

The statement clarified that the cancellation was not due to some issue related to the show’s content, adding that it was a financial decision. The statement mentioned that the decision was difficult due to the “admiration, affection, and respect” of the network for the talents of Stephen Colbert and the work done by his team so far. The statement added that the achievements of the show are memorable and the network is eagerly waiting to honor Stephen alongside celebrating the show until it ends in 2026.
