Amazon Prime Video subscribers have been urged to watch three ‘hidden gem’ films that most people have never heard of – and they’re all available right now

If you’re searching for fresh films to expand your collection, these three “hidden gems” might be ideal for you.

Few things beat settling onto the sofa and putting on a brilliant film, but for regular cinema enthusiasts, what happens once you’ve exhausted all the blockbusters? You can waste hours endlessly browsing streaming platforms attempting to discover something worthwhile, but determining quality content can prove challenging.

So if you’re craving a new obsession but haven’t a clue where to begin, one cinema enthusiast on TikTok may have precisely what you need. Trey Nesbit, a film critic on social media, revealed three “underrated” films he’d recommend to anybody.

Each of the three films he proposed are accessible on Amazon’s Prime Video platform, and they’ve all accumulated fewer than 200,000 recorded logs on the film-focused social media site, Letterboxed, making them remarkably niche.

But none qualify as indie film projects, and they all feature star-studded ensembles.

1. Thirteen Lives

Trey’s initial suggestion is a picture titled Thirteen Lives, which is a biographical survival drama from 2022 helmed by Ron Howard. The film draws from the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue, when twelve young footballers aged 11 to 16 and their 25 year old assistant coach became stranded in a cave in Thailand following football practice. Thirteen Lives features Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell, and Joel Edgerton, and Trey reckons the film would have earned millions at the box office had it been released in the early 2000s when these narratives enjoyed greater popularity.

He commented: “This is a crazy story, and somebody like Ron Howard is so good at covering true stories like this. If this movie came out, obviously this just happened a couple of years ago, but if a movie like this came out in like 2005, it would have made £300 million at the box office. But nobody saw this movie. It’s such an underrated gem.”

Thirteen Lives is included in the standard subscription of Prime Video in the UK.

2. Martha Marcy May Marlene

Martha Marcy May Marlene is the “darkest” film on Trey’s list. Released in 2011, it’s a psychological thriller drama starring Elizabeth Olsen, John Hawkes, Sarah Paulson, and Hugh Dancy.

The plot centres on a young woman called Martha (Olsen) who is grappling with PTSD following her escape from a violent and sexually abusive cult commune in the Catskill Mountains in North America.

Trey remarked: “This is a darker movie, for sure, but [an] incredible performance by Elizabeth Olsen. This really put her on the map. This [film] follows her as she is just leaving a cult, and she goes to live with her sister, Sarah Paulson, to try and deal with some of the aftereffects of being in that cult. This just really put Elizabeth Olsen on the map as just a masterclass in dominating a character and fully embodying everything that the character is going through.”

Martha Marcy May Marlene can be found on Prime Video in the UK, but isn’t part of the standard subscription and is priced at £3.49 to rent or £4.99 to purchase.

3. The Lost City of Z

The third film Trey recommends is The Lost City of Z, a 2016 biographical adventure drama adapted from David Grann’s 2009 book of the same title. The picture boasts an exceptionally star-studded ensemble, including Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson, Sienna Miller, and even Tom Holland.

The Lost City of Z chronicles the journey of British explorer Percy Fawcett (Hunnam), who travelled to Brazil and launched multiple expeditions to locate a rumoured ancient lost city deep within the Amazon.

Trey commented on the picture: “How more people haven’t seen this is crazy to me. This follows Charlie Hunnam – he’s an explorer and obviously trying to find the lost city of Z. It’s just an incredible movie.”
