Emily Atack just revived a popular trouser trend from the 90s that you’ll see everywhere this spring and summer

We have to wonder if Rivals actress Emily Atack has been watching Love Story, because her latest look channels Carolyn Bessette’s monochromatic style to a tee. Posing for new snaps on her social media, the 36-year-old looked like the picture of elegance in a pair of form-flattering trousers that fashion experts are predicting to be huge this spring and summer.

The item in question is the capri pant. Don’t picture the neon lycra style from the 80s, but rather the kind that supermodels would wear towards the late 90s– leg-lengthening, slimming and always in black. 90s it-girl Carolyn was a fan of them herself, and since her style has been trending since the Disney+ show, capris are seeing a huge resurgence.

Emily pairs her cut-off trousers with a simple cream jumper, adding flair to her outfit with the help of leopard print heels. Finishing the look with some black sunglasses and statement mixed-metal jewellery, it’s like the former Inbetweeners star just waltzed right off the pages of a vintage fashion magazine.

But here’s the great thing about capri trousers: you don’t have to have the leg length of a supermodel to wear them (as 5ft6 Emily proves herself). Capris can be amazing for slimming your legs, but only if they cut off at the narrowest part of the leg, so just below the knee or just above the ankle. If you’ve heard they’re unflattering, it’s likely because some styles cut off the leg at the thickest part of the calf, which makes the legs appear shorter and wider.

One pair you can guarantee will be flattering is M&S’ Slim Fit Capri Trousers, £29.50, because you can shop them in a petite, regular or tall sizing to suit your leg length, ensuring the trousers won’t cut you off at the wrong part of your leg. You might have to be quick if you want a pair, though, as they’re selling fast on M&S’s website – likely thanks to the rave reviews shoppers are leaving.

“These fit really well and the quality of the trousers are amazing,” pens one, while another writes: “These are dressy trousers I was looking for the cotton casual ones they do every year.”

A third adds: “I like the quality of the material and the fit is great – length comes just below the knee. Looking forward to wearing them in warmer weather.”

One buyer noted they needed to size up from their usual size, while others claimed the pairs they ordered were true to size.

Over at H&M, you’ll also find its Capri Trousers offering for £14.99. In sizes XS through to L, these calf-length, fitted trousers are made from a heavy jersey fabric with an elasticated waist and sewn-in creases down the front – ideal to pair with an oversized white shirt for a Carolyn-inspired look.
