Hyderabad:With two-wheeler riders accounting for nearly half of road fatalities, a helmet distribution drive at IKEA Rotary sought to reinforce a simple yet life-saving message: wear a helmet every time.

The initiative was organised by NTT DATA Business Solutions India Pvt. Ltd. as part of its CSR efforts, in collaboration with Sarvejana Foundation and the Telangana Facility Management Council (TFMC), and in association with Telangana Police. The programme aimed to promote responsible riding behaviour and improve helmet usage among both riders and pillion passengers.

Cyberabad Police Commissioner Dr M. Ramesh, IPS, who attended as the chief guest, highlighted that wearing helmets significantly reduces the risk of fatal injuries and should be treated as non-negotiable for all riders.

A.V. Gurava Reddy, Founder, Chairman and Managing Director of Sunshine Group of Hospitals, highlighted the human cost of road accidents, stressing that most fatalities are preventable with simple precautions like wearing helmets. Drawing from his experience as a medical professional, he said head injuries remain the leading cause of death in two-wheeler accidents and urged citizens to treat helmets as a necessity, not an option.

Speakers also highlighted alarming road safety data, noting that in India over 1.7 lakh people lose their lives in road accidents annually, with two-wheeler users forming a major share. A significant number of deaths and injuries were linked to the non-use of helmets. In Telangana alone, thousands of deaths and injuries have been attributed to riders not wearing helmets, with the city reporting frequent fatalities, including among pillion riders.

The drive specifically targeted delivery personnel, students and daily commuters, distributing helmets while also spreading awareness on road safety.
