Tarini Sardesai did not, at first, approach her wedding with a grand plan. “A part of me felt like we didn’t really need a big celebration, we already had each other,” she says. It was only after a few excited calls with family and friends that the shape of it began to emerge.
Sardesai and Zico Bahl went to the same law school, moved in overlapping circles and even used the same classroom one semester, just at different hours. “He had asked someone who I was,” says Sardesai. Their story began much later, towards the end of the pandemic, over Instagram, dogs and memes.
When Sardesai moved to Mumbai in January 2022, Bahl invited her to a party at his home, even though they had barely spoken. They became friends that evening. “Things naturally grew from there, following one slightly risky text from Zico,” she says. That February, she congratulated him on his sister’s wedding. “He joked that ours would be next,” she says.
“I hardly knew him back then… but life has a funny way of working out.”
Both lawyers, their routines began to align almost effortlessly. Sardesai, who grew up in Delhi but now considers herself “far more Bombay” than Bahl, and Bahl, who moved to Mumbai at 12, found themselves growing more alike over time. Their running debate is over who has more “Golden Retriever energy” and who leans more “Pomeranian.” “The truth is, we are both a mix of both.”
They had been together for over two years when Bahl proposed, and they married a year and a half later. The proposal came during a trip to Mauritius. Pitched at first as a surprise anniversary holiday, the destination stayed hidden until packing logistics made secrecy impossible. “At first he said it was Goa,” Sardesai says, “but when I said I didn’t really need to plan for Goa in the monsoon, he revealed it was Mauritius.”
A few days into the trip, after a scuba diving excursion Sardesai had planned for herself, they stepped out for a walk before dinner. Bahl got down on one knee. “The moment is a bit of a blur,” she says, “but I remember kneeling down too before I even said yes.” When she turned around, she noticed a photographer capturing it from a distance. A private dinner had been planned afterwards, but most of the evening was spent calling friends and family instead.
