Vernon Kay has had a long and distinguished career as a television and radio presenter, but he has also appeared in Hollywood films too

Presenter Vernon Kay is one of the most recognisable voices on British radio and television. Over a multi-decade career he has presented numerous programmes, including a show on BBC Radio 2.

However, he recently made a surprise appearance on Rylan Clark’s BBC Radio 2 show. In said appearance his role was to pose a question during a quiz about popular culture. In this case, the question didn’t just concern a random film, but something from Vernon’s career.

Vernon originally joined Radio 2 in 2021 as a stand-in for Rylan before being granted a mid-morning slot after Ken Bruce’s departure. Alongside his radio duties he also occasionally presents The One Show with Alex Jones on BBC One.

He said: “Rylan, not a lot of people know this but I’m an uncredited feasting hall guest in which 2014 mythological action film where Dwayne Johnson rocks up as the son of Zeus?”

The answer, as it turned out, was the film Hercules starring, alongside Dwayne Johnson, Ian McShane, Rebecca Ferguson, and Irina Shayk.

This isn’t the first time Vernon has talked about his career as he recently made a comedic approach to a famous book publisher about his ability to write a romance novel.

The publisher in question was Mills and Boon, a company that has worked with a bevvy of celebrities over the years including Georgia Toffolo and podcaster Abbey Clancy.

Joking that he could give Abbey a “run for her money” Vernon claimed he could write a BBC version of the Rose of Romance. He said: “I think everyone growing up of a certain age will remember the Mills and Boon series, the Rose of Romance.

“One family member at least had a selection of Mills and Boon books and even now, 118 years after the publishing imprint was founded, it’s still huge.

“One-hundred-and-eighteen pages, could smash that out easy. Not a problem, come on, get in touch. The Radio 2 Mills and Boon book…’It all happened in the eighth floor’.”

Vernon’s reference to a specific part of the building refers to which floor BBC Radio 2 is based on at Broadcasting House. Since taking over from Ken Bruce in the mid-morning slot, Vernon’s popularity has only grown further.

Speaking at the time of his appointment, however, Vernon was full of respect from the big radio shoes he was having to fill. He said: “I’m absolutely over the moon to be handed the microphone to present the mid-morning show on Radio 2, and what an honour to follow in the footsteps of the mighty Ken Bruce.

“I look forward to playing some of the best music in the world whilst in the company of the Radio 2 listeners who I feel I’ve got to know over the last 18 months. It’s a dream come true to join the Radio 2 family and I can’t wait to start.”
