LIV Golf announcer calls shutdown noise surrounding league ‘nonsense’

LIV Golf commentator David Feherty is writing off talk about the rebel league’s possible shutdown

With rumors swirling about LIV’s coming demise, Feherty opened the golf league’s first-round broadcast from Mexico City on Thursday with some strong words.

“I’ve been in the professional game for 50 years now and I don’t think I’ve ever had two or three days where there was more absolute nonsense spread out,” Feherty said. “There are still some writers and broadcasters that take pride in their work, but this generation has spawned fast typists that consider themselves to be experts, and evidently, they’re not.”

Before Feherty’s comments, his broadcast partner, Arlo White, also took shots at those claiming LIV was close to halting operations.

“We’re delighted to report that the reports of the imminent demise of the LIV Golf league were, in fact, greatly exaggerated,” White said. “I had a good chat with LIV CEO Scott O’Neil in the last hour, he was very confident about the future, very bullish about the future of the LIV Golf league.

“… It must be exhausting trying to will the LIV Golf league out of existence. Just take a day off, everybody. Enjoy the golf,” White said moments later.

Shortly after the pair’s intro, LIV’s live stream of the Mexico City tournament went dark just minutes after the first tee times, showing a message stating “please standby. Technical issues” for over an hour.

“We know many of you were tuning in, and we’re sorry for the disruption,” LIV wrote on X later on Thursday. “We’re experiencing technical difficulties due to local power outages which is impacting our broadcast feed. We’re working on a resolution and hope to be back on air as soon as possible.”

The disastrous start to Thursday’s first round comes one day after chatter exploded online about the end of LIV as we know it.

LIV executives were reportedly summoned to an “emergency summit” on Wednesday in New York to discuss the tour’s future.

The Financial Times reported Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which funds LIV Golf, was close to cutting off support for the organization, which has shaken up the golf world since launching nearly five years ago.
