Justin Fairfax Lost Custody Of Kids Because Of Heavy Alcohol Consumption, Was Ordered To Move Out

Former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax and his wife, Cerina Fairfax, have died, and their deaths have come as a shock to many. Once the second-most-powerful state politician in Virginia, Justin shot and killed his wife, Cerina and killed himself thereafter. According to multiple reports, Justin and Cerina were having trouble in their marriage and were undergoing divorce proceedings.

Justin Fairfax lost custody of his kids

According to a report in News4, Cerina filed for divorce from Justin in 2025. Amid the proceedings, a judge granted custody of their kids to Cerina and ordered Justin to move out of their home. It was Justin’s heavy alcohol consumption which led to the decision by the court. In the custody opinion, a judge wrote:

“The wife testified that heavy daily alcohol consumption by the father has become the norm.”

As per the court documents, Justin was unable to have a healthy relationship with his kids because of his alcohol use and self-isolation within the home. Justin was being punished by the court for failing to comply with existing court orders. He was recently ordered to pay USD 300 for each day he continued not to comply with orders and to compensate his wife for the money he owed her.

How did Justin Fairfax and Cerina Fairfax die?

According to Fairfax Police Chief Kevin Davis, Justin and Cerina were going through a “messy” divorce. According to police statements, on April 16, 2026, Justin allegedly shot Cerina in the basement before taking his own life in a bedroom. Their children were present at home, but they were safe. According to the initial investigation, the legal battle and ongoing conflict between the duo may have instigated the tragedy. According to Fairfax County police, Cerina installed cameras throughout the home during the divorce proceedings. Those cameras were rolling during the shooting.

Justin and Cerina’s family struggles were becoming apparent to the neighbours, but they never thought that Justin would take such a drastic step. Authorities had received a complaint from their neighbours about a disturbance at the duo’s home in Annandale, Virginia, and, upon arrival, they found something unexpected. 

Cerina Fairfax accused Justin Fairfax of financial neglect

Justin Fairfax and Cerina Fairfax had a long marriage before their relationship grew difficult. In 2024, problems began to crop up in their marriage. They parted ways and began living separately in June 2024, but remained in the same home, occupying different spaces. The duo even signed a post-nuptial agreement to address the division of assets, but it did not resolve their issues. According to the divorce filings obtained by TMZ, Cerina Fairfax made multiple serious allegations against her estranged husband, Justin Fairfax. She claimed that Justin did not meet the key financial obligations towards her and their kids.
