Rescue effort begins to save stranded whale Timmy in Germany

A new rescue operation has started to try to save the stranded humpback whale Timmy off the northern coast of Germany.

The whale, also known as ‘Hope’, has been stuck in shallow waters near the island of Poel in the Baltic Sea since early March. Experts say the animal is severely weakened, but still alive.

After failed attempts, rescuers will now try a new method using large air cushions to lift the whale from the seabed. The plan is to carefully place the cushions under the animal and raise him to the surface.

From there, the whale would be placed on a tarp and pulled by a tugboat along the coast of Denmark and into the North Sea, where he may have a better chance of survival.

Officials described the method as “minimally invasive”, but warned that the situation remains critical.

According to local media, a veterinarian from Hawaii is expected to arrive to support the rescue. Authorities are working quickly to approve her qualifications so she can help on site.

Normally, this process takes weeks or months, but it is now being completed within hours.

Live coverage draws global attention

The rescue has attracted international attention, with local media providing live coverage of the operation. The case has sparked strong public interest and debate about whether the rescue should go ahead.

Authorities have created a safety zone around the whale and are asking the public to stay away to allow rescuers to work.

Wildlife experts say the whale is in very poor condition. He may have been injured by a ship or fishing nets. The whale is also suffering from skin problems caused by the low salt levels in the Baltic Sea.

Previous rescue attempts, including digging a channel to guide the whale back to deeper water, were unsuccessful.

Some organisations, including Greenpeace, have criticised the new rescue effort, saying it could cause more harm to the already weakened animal.

Despite the risks, authorities approved the operation after a reassessment showed a small chance of success.

Officials say the outcome remains uncertain, but rescuers are continuing their efforts.
