AR Rahman Shares His Memories of Asha Bhosle

We in South India were absolutely blown by her rendition of Dum maro dum. That was amazing sound and vocals, nothing that we had heard before. So when we worked on the music of Rangeela (1995) we looked for a new kind of sound. And the director Ram Gopal Varma and all of us decided on the voice of Asha Bhosle. Tanha tanha was the first song we recorded. It all happened in a matter of two hours. I recall her running away from the sound booth because I used to put agarbattis and dhoop. She said that would affect her sound quality. So then we had to vacuum the room until it was all clear of any smoke. And she sang. We did almost 11-12 songs together. We then recorded Yai re for Rangeela, we did Mere dil ka woh shehzaada for Kabhi Na Kabhi (1998). She sang a couple of Tamil songs for me also for Mani Ratnam films – Vennila for Iruvar (1997) and September madham for Alai Payuthey (2000). We did some nice songs for Daud (1997) also – Zehreela pyar, Oh! Sai yaiye and O Bhavre. There are even some nice songs like Dhuan dhuan from Meenaxi: Tale of Three Cities (2004) and Kahin aag lage lag jaaye in Taal (1999).

Actually if you ask me specifics, I don’t remember too much. She would fly down to my studio record and go. As always, absolutely professional.

We hadn’t met in long. So recently, I went over to her home. I presented her with a bouquet. She asked me if I was angry with her, I laughed and said no just been out of touch. She said I have changed. So I asked, how? She said you gave me a bouquet, that’s what’s changed. Ha!

Her granddaughter Zanai has performed at my shows.

I remember Ashaji saying when I get better, let me cook you a nice meal.

She was also the brand ambassador of Bharat Maestro Awards – something which we have instituted to honour classical maestros in the field of Indian music.

What can I say about this legend with immense talent? I’ve a secret which will be revealed in due course. Watch this space, as they say.
