Kirk Sutherland has been rather unlucky in love on Coronation Street, but in real life, actor Andy Whyment is loved-up with his rarely-seen wife
Coronation Street’s Andy Whyment is a soap legend, playing Kirk Sutherland.
Andy shot to fame when he joined the ITV soap in 2000 as Kirk Sutherland, Maria Connor’s (Samia Longchambon) brother. And it’s fair to say it didn’t take him long to become a firm favourite.
Famous for his one-liners and lovable personality, Kirk’s been involved in several big storylines during his stint on the cobbles.
From his rollercoaster romance with Fiz Brown (Jennie McAlpine) to finding love with Beth Tinker (Lisa George) – which eventually ended – Kirk’s time in Weatherfield has not been short of drama.
Away from the soap, actor Andy is loved-up with his long-term wife Nichola, whom he met in 2004. Talking previously, Andy gushed over Nichola, telling OK! “I’ve been punching above my weight for years – she’s gorgeous! I’m a very lucky bloke.”
He also recalled meeting his future wife for the first time. Andy explained: “I fancied Nic for some time, but nothing happened.
“Then we copped off one night, and it wasn’t too long before I realised she was the one I wanted to be with. I said in my wedding speech, you just know when you meet the one, and that’s true.”
As for Nichola, her first impression of Andy was that he was “a bit of an idiot” when she met him, so it took her a “good few months” to fall in love.
She added: “He was single and sharing a place with Al (Alan Halsall, who plays Tyrone Dobbs in Coronation Street). He was just giving it big time and not doing what I wanted him to do.”
Going from strength to strength, Andy proposed to Nichola on a beach while holidaying in Monte Carlo. The pair then tied the knot in 2007 in a romantic ceremony that was attended by his co-stars, including Tina O’Brien, Ryan Thomas and Samia Longchambon.
Andy and Nichola then had two children. Tom was born on October 12, 2008, with Hollie arriving two years later on October 9, 2010
Although Andy is a proud dad, he previously revealed he will not be adding to his family after undergoing a vasectomy.
He told OK: “There’s no chance of having any more kids as I had the snip a few years ago. We said we wanted two kids, and we have been really fortunate to have a boy and a girl.”
Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX
