BBC star Finnian Garbutt leaves behind his new wife Louise and their one-year-old daughter Saoirse as tributes and donations continue to come in following the 28-year-old’s death
The online fundraiser to raise money to support tragic BBC actor Finnian Garbutt’s young family has received more than £100,000 in donations.
The death of a 28-year-old was announced on Friday by his heartbroken relatives, four years after he was diagnosed with skin cancer. Finnian, best known for his role as PC Ryan Power in the popular crime series Hope Street, had spoken publicly about his diagnosis and treatment as he battled the disease.
He leaves behind his new wife, Louise, whom he married late last year, and their one-year-old daughter, Saoirse. In his final weeks, a GoFundMe page was set up to help them following his passing and fans and well-wishers have raced to pledge money following today’s devastating news.
He spoke openly about the moment he knew his life had changed when a mole was discovered by his barber during a haircut was found to be malignant melanoma. Over 2,000 people have so far helped raise almost £98,000 as the cash keeps coming in.
Explaining what any donations would be used for before his death, the page read: “No doubt you’ve seen that Finnian’s received some devastating news regarding his cancer, and that we’re now in an end-of-life stage of his journey. This has been extremely difficult for all of us, especially his young family.
“Finnian and Louise, his wonderful wife, were married only 6 months ago. Their daughter, Saoirse, celebrated her 1st birthday the weekend before that.
“Though Finn has been living with cancer for 4 years and has spoken very openly about his experience and been able to make certain preparations, we all believed he had more time to come. Sadly, with the cancer spreading rapidly, we now have to cherish each day we have left with him.
“We in the family are doing all we can to ensure Louise and Saoirse have all the love and support we can offer. But Finn is very aware that he isn’t able to provide the kind of financial security he wished he could to his wife and daughter.
“As a result, we’ve decided to launch this GoFundMe. If you were able to contribute, your donation would help Louise to: Take time off work while she deals with her grief. Pay for essential bills, including the mortgage her and Finn share. Put money aside for the raising and education of Saoirse. Pay for other expenses that might come up when the time comes.
“If you’re unable to donate any money but would like to pass a message of support, or offer any other form of help to Louise, Finn, or Saoirse, we’ll make it easy for you to reach out to us. Any and all support will be greatly appreciated.”
Today, a statement confirmed the actor died on Thursday, at his home. “We’re absolutely heartbroken to announce that Finnian passed away yesterday after a sudden decline in his condition. He passed peacefully at home, as he wished, surrounded by his family,” it read.
