Zara McDermott has told fans that she is struggling to cope with One Direction fans who constantly criticise her every move, after she went public with her relationship with Louis Tomlinson last year
At first glance it looks as though Zara McDermott is living the perfect life. Not only has she carved out a career for herself making documentaries for the BBC but she is also dating One Direction star Louis Tomlinson.
But behind the scenes, it looks as though the former reality TV star is struggling to deal with the constant online abuse she receives from his die hard fans.
Louis, 34, first joined the band when he was only 18 years old. And so at the time, the singer’s fanbase meant everything to him. But nearly two decades later, it looks as though his fans are still just as protective over him.
So much so, some of his fan base attack her for “following” him around the world where he plays gigs to sold out crowds.

This comes after Zara posted a snap of herself in the Italian city of Milan where Louis was performing. Soon after her snap went live she was being trolled by his fans.
A source told The Sun: “Zara can’t win with the trolls. She’s either accused of ‘following’ Louis around the world or is slated for not being a supportive enough girlfriend.” They added: “It’s like she’s damned if you do, damned if you don’t.”
At the time, Zara was sent horrid messages. One person wrote: “I’d be embarrassed if I were my boyfriend’s pet that follows him everywhere.” Another added: “You don’t have a job? Why are you following Louis around lol.”
And a third person penned: “You’re embarrassment to the fanbase.” But it didn’t end there. A fourth person chimed in and wrote: “You are simply a PR stunt nothing more.” “Do you have a proper job or is your job using Louis for money?” said a fifth.
The couple, who had been dating since March last year, went public in August by posting a picture of them in a romantic embrace, following her split from Sam Thompson.
But now, in the wake of the online abuse she received from posting from Milan, Zara has decided to keep more of a low profile in a bid to lessen the attacks.
The source told the publication that Zara is completely smitten by Louis and the singer feels exactly the same way. And this explains why they enjoy being around one another all the time. But this, they said, has come at a cost for Zara. but Louis is said to be incredibly “supportive.”
Speaking about how his love for Zara had impacted his creativity when it comes to writing music, he said while on The Diary of a CEO podcast: “I’m a deeply, deeply romantic person. It’s also easy to be romantic when you are a creative… I really struggle to write in a fictional sense, I really struggle.”
He added: “For me, I have to have been living it, it has to be real to me. So, if I wasn’t feeling so good, like right now, I wasn’t feeling so in love… the record probably would have a slightly different feel to it.”
He continued: “One thing I was thinking about with this record, my intention is just to maybe feel good. I know that’s a really cliché and obvious thing to say, but I’m not sure some of my other music did that. It made you feel, it was honest, it was painful at times, but it didn’t feel good.”
“So, I think now I’ve got this almost new sense of life, a new sense of happiness, and purpose, and fulfilment, all those things,” he concluded.
