Brutal Williams verdict delivered: ‘Like talking about a special holiday and missing the flight’

Formula 1 commentator Alex Jacques has delivered a damning verdict on Williams’ troublesome start to the 2026 season, claiming “it’s like talking about a really special family holiday for two years and missing the flight.”

Expectations were high for the Grove outfit heading into 2026. Team principal James Vowles had been open with fans throughout 2025 to manage their expectations as the majority of the squad’s focus was being placed on the 2026 regulations.

But after Williams missed the private testing in Barcelona, it arrived at pre-season testing in Bahrain on the back foot.

After the first three rounds of the season, Williams sits ninth in the constructors’ standings with just two points.

Jacques gave his analysis of the Vowles-led team during an F1 season start debrief video. “I think it’s really chastening for them. I think James Vowles is so eloquent with the way he’s opened up the understanding of the processes and what they’ve been doing,” he said.

“It’s like talking about a really special family holiday for two years and missing the flight. How do you talk it up for two years?

“If they were where they were last year, I think there would have still been a little bit of disappointment if they were fifth. They were like, ‘Oh, we’re not closer to the front.’ I still think they would have been like, ‘We’ve been aiming for this.’

Alex Albon hasn’t scored a point since September in the Italian Grand Prix. Carlos has magicked two podiums from thin air, including Qatar. I know we’re all focusing on the world championship, but that’s an unbelievable performance. He’s been on the podium. He had something to prove after he left Ferrari. He did it in Baku, did it in Qatar. He’s done it.

“Alex Albon’s only got two career podiums. He’s been waiting for 2026 for his entire time at Williams, and they’ve missed the boat.”
