HYDERABAD: The government will soon issue orders making it mandatory for gated communities and apartment complexes to install EV charging portals. The transport, fire and electricity departments are preparing the notification as sales of electric vehicles have spiked by 22 per cent since the state’s EV policy came into effect.

Transport commissioner K. Ilambarthi, IAS, told Deccan Chronicle that in the past year the department has introduced several reforms aimed at reducing carbon footprint and road fatalities. “The benefits manufacturers are enjoying under the EV policy must also translate into infrastructure. They should come forward to invest in charging facilities, especially in rural areas where availability is close to zero,” he said.

Data shows strong public response to the policy. In FY 2024‑25, before the policy (April–15 November 2024), 47,730 EVs were registered. After the policy (16 November 2024–March 2025), 29,344 were registered. In FY 2025‑26, registrations rose sharply to 91,572, taking the total to 1,68,646.

Officials said transformer upgrades will be required in gated communities and apartments to support charging infrastructure, with fire safety also a top priority.

Ilambarthi also addressed a press meet on the VAHAN portal, developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to digitise vehicle services across the state. The rollout is being done in phases. So far, 59,567 temporary registrations have been generated at dealer level since March 23, 2026. The fancy number allotment module has issued 1,262 special registration numbers, while 9,282 vehicles have received permanent registration numbers.

The portal is being progressively stabilised with NIC support, with full functionality expected within 15–30 days. Training sessions have been conducted for automobile dealers, and on April 19, 2026, a comprehensive training and feedback session was held for all departments. Based on feedback, software modifications and bug fixes are under way to enhance user‑friendliness. Regular online meetings are being held with dealers and officials to ensure smooth adoption of the VAHAN application.
