Among the scouts who were curious — and some were quite skeptical — about the new-look Mets, there was one aspect of the rebuild that seemed pretty foolproof: Bo Bichette was going to hit.
Maybe his play at third base wouldn’t be stellar, but the former shortstop was never known for his glove when he played for the Blue Jays, so why should that be the case with the Mets when he was at third?
What was unexpected was the lack of offense.
“I wasn’t sure how he’d do at third and the only reason I was worried about that was because [Francisco] Lindor is slipping at short and that could mean a shaky left side of the infield,’’ one National League scout said. “What wasn’t a concern was the fact that [Bichette] was gonna hit. And he isn’t.”
