
Karwar: The Sirsi New Market police in Uttara Kannada district cracked a murder case within 24 hours of its registration, arresting a 70-year-old person accused of killing a doctor and decamping with valuables.
The accused has been identified as Manjunath PL, a resident of Padubail in Malalur village of Thirthahalli taluk in Shivamogga district. Manjunath is in the hotel business.
The accused allegedly murdered Dr Ramesh Fakirappa Kalakutkar by striking him on the back of the head with a weapon, causing fatal injuries.
According to the complaint lodged by the victim’s brother, the incident is believed to have taken place between 7.30 pm on April 18 and 4 pm on April 19. After committing the crime, the accused allegedly locked the front door of the house and fled to avoid suspicion.
Based on the complaint, Sirsi New Market police registered a case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and launched an investigation.
Police teams, formed under the supervision of Sirsi sub-division DySP Geeta Patil, used a combination of local intelligence and technical analysis to trace the accused. He was arrested within a day of the case being registered.
During the operation, police recovered the weapon used in the crime, gold ornaments worth Rs 15 lakh, and Rs 50,000 in cash from the accused.
Uttara Kannada Superintendent of Police Deepan MN commended the team for swiftly solving the case. Further probe is in progress.
