Nellore: In a major crackdown amid the ongoing IPL season, the district police busted an online cricket betting racket and arrested 12 persons, exposing transactions worth nearly Rs 1.5 crore.

Acting on the directions of district SP Ajitha Vejendla, special teams led by ASP Deeksha conducted raids across lodges and suspected locations. During the late-night operation on April 19, the Dargamitta police caught four persons red-handed at a lodge in Magunta Layout while they were running an online betting operation.

Investigation revealed that the prime accused, Shaik Fariyaz, was operating as a sub-admin for an online betting platform and coordinating a network of punters. Police identified 14 accused in total, of whom 12 have been arrested, while two are absconding.

Police seized Rs 2.05 lakh in cash, 13 mobile phones and a television set. Digital scrutiny showed that transactions of around Rs 1.5 crore were carried out through payment apps.

All the arrested were produced before a court and remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody. Efforts are on to freeze associated bank accounts.
