Traffic co-founder Dave Mason has died. His family announced that the late musician died on April 19 after living a “remarkable life” which he “devoted to music”.

In a statement on behalf of his family, a spokesperson said: “On behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of Dave Mason.”

They added that the “Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, celebrated songwriter, musician, singer, and author passed away peacefully at his home in Gardnerville, Nev. “Dave Mason lived a remarkable life devoted to the music and the people he loved.” A cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

Mason, originally from Worcester, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of Traffic’s co-founders in 2004, almost four decades after the rock band formed.

The legendary group formed in 1967, in Birmingham, originally consisting of Steve Winwood, Dave, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood. Just two years after the group formed, Dave moved from the UK to the United States, spending 16 years in Ojai, California, before later purchasing homes in Carson City, Nevada, and Hawaii.

The late musician was responsible for penning Traffic’s 1969 hit, Feelin’ Alright, which charted at Number 51 on the Official UK Charts. He also penned Hole in My Shoe for the band, with Dave’s guitar playing becoming a signature element in the group’s blend of blues and psychedelic tracks.

Despite their success, Dave decided to quit the group not long after the release of their first album, Mr Fantasy, although he later rejoined them in 1971 and again in 2004.
