The Strictly Come Dancing stars are preparing to head back out on tour together, although their future on the BBC show has yet to be confirmed
Strictly Come Dancing star Carlos Gu has opened up about the unseen side of his friendship with co-star Amy Dowden – revealing it’s far from picture-perfect. Describing their bond as more like siblings than colleagues, Carlos admitted the pair clash just as often as they get along. That dynamic, he said, was especially clear when they swapped the ballroom for the challenges of Celebrity Hunted.
Reflecting on their relationship, he told Heat Magazine: “We’re like brother and sister. We recently filmed Celebrity Hunted and the arguments were relentless – we nearly murdered each other! Amy was the leader and I was the entertainment, but our relationship is now even stronger.”
With the duo set to head back out on tour next month, Carlos was full of praise for his partner. “Amy is an amazing dancer and an incredible inspiration,” he added.
“She’s a fighter, and that’s why this show is called Reborn – it’s about who we were and who we’re becoming.”
Both dancers have faced personal challenges in recent years. Amy has been particularly open about her health struggles, including a battle with grade three breast cancer.
Following her diagnosis in 2023, she underwent chemotherapy and a mastectomy, later confirming there is no evidence of disease, though she continues with regular check-ups and ongoing care.
She also lives with Crohn’s disease and has had a series of setbacks including a broken foot, sepsis and blood clots. Despite this, Amy recently told fans on Instagram she feels “happier, stronger and more confident than ever” and is hoping to return to Strictly this year.
Speaking to The Metro newspaper, she said: “If I’m asked back, I’d love to get to Blackpool on Strictly to prove to myself that I’m back to where I was before cancer.
“I’d love to enjoy my tenth year on the show, then move into presenting – and maybe one day even join the judging panel.”
For Carlos, the tour’s title also carries personal meaning, reflecting his decision to move from China to the UK to join Strictly. The life-changing decision meant putting an end his 20-year dance partnership with Susan Sun, with whom he won multiple competitions.
While the split initially caused friction between them, they have since reconciled, with Susan sending her congratulations when he lifted the Glitterball trophy with Karen Carney last year.
Carlos, meanwhile, has admitted the uncertainty around the show’s line-up is daunting. The BBC are yet to announce which professionals will be making a comeback later this year, after four were dropped from the line-up.
Speaking on Kate Thornton’s White Wine Question Time podcast recently, he said: “We’ve all seen the news, but nothing’s been confirmed by the BBC yet, so we’re waiting. Being in a position where you don’t know if you’re staying or not is scary.
“We work so hard, but some things are simply out of your hands.”
