A black labrador, named Hugo, was found injured after an incident at a city wall but thanks to comedian Ricky Gervais, the adorable pooch now has a new lease of life

A terrified dog hurled from a city wall has been given a new lease of life, thanks to a touching act of generosity from Ricky Gervais. The black labrador, known as Hugo, suffered multiple fractures following the horrifying incident in Canterbury, with a witness rushing to his aid after discovering him hurt and alone.

He was taken in by Flori’s Friends Rescue, where staff swiftly recognised the severity of his injuries – but the cost of treatment was considerable. Step forward Gervais and his remarkable generosity. The comedian had donated £100,000 to the charity earlier this year – a contribution that has already transformed the lives of countless animals.

For Hugo, it meant he could receive the urgent surgery he so desperately required, at a cost of around £5,000.

Highlighting the impact of the donation, the rescue said: “We’ve received this support with immense gratitude, and we wanted to share how it’s already making a real difference.”

Hugo’s tale is just one of many. Thanks to the funding, three dogs have undergone stem cell transplants, and two paralysed dogs have been fitted with custom-made wheels to help them get back on their feet.

On top of this, 23 cats have also been neutered.

Further animals have received life-changing treatment – among them a cat named Tony, who required £9,000 worth of care for multiple infections and spinal problems, and a Yorkie called Georgie, who made a full recovery following £6,000 of specialist treatment.

Yet it is Hugo’s story that has truly resonated. Discarded in such a heartless manner, he could so easily have become another tragic statistic. Instead, he is now firmly on the path to recovery – all because somebody chose to make a difference.

In a heartfelt message, the charity said: “From all of us, and from every animal whose life has been touched by this support, thank you.

“Your compassion has made the seemingly impossible, possible.”

In just 16 weeks, the impact of the donation has been hailed as “extraordinary” – with lives not merely saved, but utterly transformed.

Although Hugo still has a long road ahead, one thing is abundantly clear – he no longer has to face it on his own.
