Hyderabad: Director General (Fire and disaster response) Vikram Singh Mann conducted an extensive field inspection of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in Kokapet on Wednesday.

The visit covered the rapidly developing Kokapet corridor, including the charge zone EV public charging station, as well as a nearby residential enclave. The inspection focused on evaluating the fire safety standards required to govern the region’s expanding EV ecosystem.

At the public charging hub in Kokapet, Vikram Singh engaged with technical experts to assess the operational safety of the high-capacity fast chargers. “We identified key areas of focus including critical failure-prevention mechanisms such as earth-leakage protection, thermal monitoring systems and automatic shutdown protocols during power surges,” Vikram Singh said.

By reviewing these systems in a high-traffic environment, he aimed to identify potential risks associated with public EV infrastructure and ensure that future regulations mandate stringent maintenance practices and reliable fire safety interlocks for commercial operators.

The DG later visited a high-rise residential complex at Kokapet to understand the challenges of integrating EV infrastructure within residential settings. He inspected private charging units and residential slowchargers to understand how domestic electrical grids handle sustained high-load demand.

This phase of the inspection was particularly important for evaluating fire safety measures in enclosed parking areas and assessing whether existing building fire fighting systems are adequate to support long-term EV adoption. The objective was to determine how residential safety standards must evolve to mitigate electrical and fire hazards.

Concluding the visit, he emphasised that these first-hand observations would play a crucial role in drafting comprehensive state regulations. Insights gathered during the visit will help in the regulatory framework designed to balance the transition to green energy with uncompromising public safety.

“As we transition to electric mobility, our regulations must be proactive rather than reactive,” he stated, reaffirming the department’s commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment for EV users and the public at large.
