For the TIME100 Summit in New York, Nita Ambani wore a Swadesh Jamdani sari woven by Padma Shree awardee Biren Kumar Basak. Instead of treating the pallu as the main event, the sari spreads its figurative motifs across the entire drape, with riders, animals, trees and human forms appearing from border to body.
The base stays a muted beige, which keeps the embroidered stories from feeling too dense. The motifs are picked out in pink, green and soft blue, allowing your eyes to follow the stories the drape carries. Along the edges, the border shifts into tighter, repeated bands of smaller figures, creating a clearer frame.

The pallu moves into a more linear layout, with stripes and denser patterning that contrast the spread of motifs across the rest of the sari. Up close, the weave carries the same level of detail as the larger figures, which is what holds the composition together.
She paired it with long pearl strands, emerald studs, a diamond ring and bracelets that picked up the green in the weave. The beauty choices stayed just as measured: centre-parted hair worn loose, lightly smoked eyes, a nude lip and a green bindi that tied back to the sari and jewellery.
From Vogue’s fashion desk:
“When working with local embroidered crafts, make the piece the focal point and style with minimalism as Nita Ambani has with her sari. The sari has thread work of muted multicolour embroidered stories, so the blouse reads subtle but still rich through its beadwork. To make this your own, you can opt for a sheer organza or subtle lace crop top which doesn’t take away from your look. Match this with small pearls or solitaire earrings,” says Divya Balakrishnan, Vogue India fashion associate.
