TIRUPATI: A man was arrested for allegedly murdering another man following a dispute over an extramarital relationship in Tirupati, on Thursday.

The case came to light after Divakar, 38, a resident of STV Nagar, was found dead in a drainage canal on the night of March 8. Police initially registered a case of suspicious death and launched an investigation.

Police said the probe revealed that the accused, Sankranti Prasad, 39, a daily wage labourer from the same locality, was married to Pramila, a native of Tamil Nadu. Divakar’s family was staying in the terrace portion of Prasad’s house. During this period, Divakar allegedly developed an illicit relationship with Pramila.

When Prasad questioned her, she reportedly left for Tamil Nadu along with her children, while he continued to stay alone in Tirupati.

Police said Prasad and Divakar consumed alcohol together on the day of the incident. During the interaction, Divakar allegedly made derogatory remarks about Pramila, enraging Prasad. Later, when Divakar was returning home in an inebriated condition, Prasad allegedly pushed him into a nearby drainage canal and held him down, leading to his death.

The accused later confessed to the crime during questioning and was taken into custody. Further investigation is underway.
