Tirupati: Energy minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar on Friday urged students of government schools to raise their academic standards to remain competitive in an increasingly demanding educational environment.

After distributing free bicycles to 96 students of Zilla Parishad High Schools at Mukteswaram and Chennupalli in Addanki constituency, the minister said students in government institutions should study on par with those in private schools to secure better opportunities.

He said 11,200 bicycles had so far been distributed in Addanki constituency with donor support to help students attend school. He added that students were being provided free uniforms, textbooks, bags and shoes under the leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

Gottipati said several schools earlier had only one teacher, affecting learning standards. He noted that under the supervision of Education minister Nara Lokesh, 16,400 teacher posts had been filled through DSC recruitment, strengthening the education system.

He directed officials to ensure quality mid-day meals and timely delivery of welfare benefits. He also urged village elders to monitor meal quality and appealed to parents to enrol their children in government schools.

Later, the minister laid the foundation stone for the Sri Sitarama Anjaneya Swamy temple at Ballikurava, for which the government sanctioned Rs1 crore in addition to Rs 50 lakh contributed by local residents.

He also inaugurated rooftop solar units on 30 houses in an SC colony. The minister said the government was targeting 20 lakh solar connections across the state, including free 2 kW units for eligible SC and ST families and subsidies for others.

He said RDSS works worth Rs 8,000 crore were under way and, once completed, would ensure 24-hour quality power supply in villages and nine hours of daytime supply for farmers.
