Nellore: Tension prevailed at the Gandaboyanapalle toll plaza in Valmikipuram mandal of Annamayya district after followers of Kalyandurg MLA Amilineni Surendra Babu allegedly assaulted toll plaza employees on Saturday.
The incident reportedly took place around 9.30 am when the MLA’s convoy was stopped at the toll plaza as payment through UPI for one of the vehicles was being processed. Angered by the delay, the MLA’s followers, including security personnel, allegedly confronted the staff and questioned how a ruling party MLA’s vehicle could be stopped.
During the altercation, the followers allegedly attacked toll plaza staff, including a woman employee, Srilatha, and manager Ravi Babu. Eyewitnesses claimed the group behaved aggressively, pulled the woman by her hair and physically assaulted employees. The MLA’s gunman is also alleged to have damaged the toll barrier.
Despite the seriousness of the incident, no case had been registered till late evening. Vayalpadu Circle Inspector Raghava Reddy said no formal complaint had been received.
The entire episode was captured on CCTV cameras installed at the toll plaza. According to a staff member, the MLA’s followers arrived shortly after the initial stoppage and reacted on the assumption that the convoy had been deliberately delayed.
The employee further said Srilatha fainted and suffered a drop in blood pressure following the incident. It was also alleged that the group forcibly took manager Ravi Babu away in their vehicle.
Video footage of the incident triggered outrage on social media, with many condemning the alleged high-handed behaviour of political aides towards toll plaza workers.
