Set in the swinging sixties in London, it’s guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
If you’re a fan of historical dramas but find yourself bored by the usual period offerings on streaming at the moment, there’s one film you need to add to your watchlist immediately. Released in 2021, it’s a “deliciously twisted” ride that’ll keep you gripped right until the very last moment.
The film, Last Night in Soho, directed by Edgar Wright, has recently landed on Channel 4’s streaming platform. Boasting an all-star cast including Matt Smith, Anya Taylor-Joy and Sam Claflin, it’s the ideal choice for a cosy night in. Fans have described it as “dark and twisted,” with a “fabulous 60s soundtrack” throughout.
The psychological horror-thriller centres on fashion student Eloise (Thomasin McKenzie), who has an obsession with the 1960s, its culture and particularly its fashion. When she moves from rural life to study in modern-day London, she finds herself overwhelmed by the city’s chaotic energy, struggles to connect with her fellow students, and eventually takes a room in a bedsit belonging to a strange landlady.
Before long, Eloise discovers she can “transport” herself back to the Soho of the 1960s through her dreams, where she is plunged into the life of Sandie (Anya Taylor-Joy), a confident and glamorous aspiring singer.
At first, these journeys are a wonderful source of creative inspiration for Eloise. Sandie’s world is a far cry from Eloise’s everyday existence – it’s a glamorous whirl of nightly performances in jazz clubs.
When she encounters Jack, portrayed by Matt Smith, he presents himself as a talent manager who vows to help her fulfil her dream of stardom. But as Eloise’s visions unfold, Jack is revealed to be far more sinister and manipulative than he initially appeared.
The boundary between the past and the present begins to dissolve as the dark underbelly of the 1960s underworld comes to light. As the dreams morph into terrifying visions, Eloise’s grip on reality begins to crumble, and she must unearth the truth about the past before it destroys her present-day life.
The film has received widespread acclaim from both critics and audiences. The Guardian hailed it as “a deliciously twisted journey back to London’s swinging past” and “a head-spinning fable that twists from finger-snapping retro fun to giallo-esque slasher fantasy”.
It holds an impressive score of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, with one fan writing: “Without a doubt, my favourite Edgar Wright film. Perfect 1960s deep cut soundtrack, great thriller pacing, and great plot. A movie that sticks with you long after the credits roll – as does the soundtrack. An endlessly rewatchable, fantastic film.”
Another said: “Absolutely love this stylish, visually stunning film with great music. One of those rare films I would be happy to watch every few weeks – the soundtrack, the sets and 1960s London – as good as it gets!”
Last Night in Soho is available to stream for free on Channel 4.
