The strongest shaking, registered at lower 5+, was recorded in Urahoro, while Niikappu logged lower 5.
The meteorological agency issued an Emergency Earthquake Warning following the tremor.
Video footage from live cameras in areas including Obihiro and Mukawa captured intense shaking, while reports submitted to Weathernews said objects had fallen inside homes and buildings.
Experts said the quake occurred at a relatively deep point underground, making a large number of aftershocks less likely. However, authorities urged residents to remain alert for further updates and possible additional seismic activity.
The affected region lies above a complex underground zone shaped by the subduction of the Pacific Plate, an area known for repeated seismic activity.
